IV. यज्ञोपवीत धारण मन्त्रं

१. आचमनं
After doing achamanam,sit down and keep two blades of darba grass under your feet, wear a 2 blades of grass pavitram on your ring finger and also hold 2 grasses of darba around your ring finger.

२.
शुक्लांबरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजं।
प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्व विघ्नोऽपशान्तये ॥

३. प्राणायामम्

Place the right thumb and the right ring finger on your right and left nostril respectively. Pressing the right nostril using your thumb breathe in using your left nostril while saying the following.

ॐ भूः । ॐ भुवः। ॐ सुवः। ॐ महः। ॐ तपः। ॐ सत्यं । ॐ तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गोदेवस्य धीमहि । धियोयोनः प्रचोदयात् ॥

Release air through right nostril after holding left nostril with ring finger while saying

ओमापः ज्योतीरसः अमृतं ब्रह्म भूर्भुवस्वरोम् ॥

४. संकल्पं

Keep your left hand sideways on your right thigh with the inner palm facing upwards and cover it perpendicularly with your right palm aligned with your thigh in such a way that it's inner palm faces downwards.

ममोपात्त समस्त दुरितक्षय द्वारा श्री परमेश्वर प्रीत्यर्थं श्रौतस्मार्त विहित नित्यकर्मानुष्ठान योग्यतासिद्ध्यर्थं ब्रह्मतेजसः अभिवृद्ध्यर्थं यज्ञोपवीतधारणं करिष्ये ।

Touch your head while saying the below mantra
यग्योपवीतधारण महामन्त्रस्य ( यज्ञोपवीतमित्यस्य महामन्त्रस्य ) परब्रह्मऋषिः

Touching the tip of your nose, say,
त्रिष्टुप् छन्दः

Touching your chest, say,
परमात्मा देवता

Keep your hands such that you can see your inner palms, fold inwards and bring them to the folding palm position while saying,
यज्ञोपवीतधारणे विनियोघः

६ यज्ञोपवीत धारणं

Place the new poonal thread in such a way such that it runs over the inner palm of your right hand and the bhrammamudichu (knot) is on your ring finger and the inner right palm facing upwards (away from the earth). Now place your left hand on the portion of the poonal hanging free in sucha way that the it runs over the inner palm of your left hand which faces towards the ground. Chant the mantra below and wear the poonal to your right.

यज्ञोपवीतं परमं पवित्रं प्रजापतेः यत् सहजं पुरस्तात् आयुष्यं अग्र्यं प्रतिमुञ्च शुभ्रं यज्ञोपवीतं बलमस्तु तेजः ।

Those who are married must do the same again for their second poonal. people who wear three poonals must repeat this once more.

After doing achamanam, remove your old poonal and place it in water.Repeat for your second or third poonal.

उपवीतं भिन्नतन्तु जीर्णं कश्मदूषितं विसृजामि जले (नहि) ब्रह्मवर्चः दीर्धायुः अस्तु मे ।

This concludes the yagyopaveeta dhaaranam. After this only the bhramacharis should wear the yellow sacred thread (in places where you dont get the sacred thread one can wear the dharba grass blades like a thread) whilw saying the following

इयं दुरुक्तात् परिबाधमाना वर्णं पवित्रं पुनती न आगात् । प्राणापानाभ्यां बलं आहरन्ती स्वसादेवी सुभगा मेखलीयं । ऋतस्य गोप्त्री तपसः परस्वी घ्नती रक्षः सहमाना अरातीः । सामा समन्तं अभिपर्येहि भद्रे धर्तारस्ते मेखले मारिषाम ।

After this, the bhramacharis must also tie the piece of deer skin to their poonal by reciting ॐ. After tying the deerskin, say the below mantra and keep the samithu dhandam (rod).

सुश्रवसः सुश्रवसं मा कुरु यथा त्वं सुश्रवः सुश्रवाः देवेषु एवमहं सुश्रवः सुश्रवाः ब्राह्मणेषु भूयासं।
